How climate change affects elephants

“Climate Change: The Impact on Elephant Habitats and How We Can Help”

In recent years, the impact of climate change on wildlife has become increasingly evident. While some regions are experiencing more frequent droughts, others are facing increased rainfall and flooding. This imbalance in weather patterns has significant consequences for the habitats of many species, including elephants.

Every July, the monsoon season in India brings heavy rains and floods, leading to the separation of young animals from their parents. This includes elephants, who often find themselves stranded and in need of rescue. Organizations like the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) have been actively involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants in India. In places like Kaziranga National Park, efforts are made to reunite separated elephants with their families. For those that cannot be reunited, they are brought to facilities like the IFAW-Wildlife Trust of India Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation for care and eventual release back into the wild.

The rising global temperatures are a major concern for all animal species, including elephants. With the planet’s atmospheric temperature already exceeding 1.15°C above pre-industrial levels, the projected increase of almost 3°C by 2100 poses a serious threat to wildlife. Elephants, in particular, are highly sensitive to temperature changes. Studies have shown that Asian elephants prefer temperatures below 24°C, yet they often experience higher temperatures, leading to heat-related illnesses and deaths.

African savannah elephants have also been found to alter their behaviors in response to higher temperatures. They spend more time seeking shade and water to cool down, and their feeding and resting patterns change as well. However, their ability to adapt to these changes is dependent on the availability of resources and their ability to move freely within their habitats.

IFAW’s Room to Roam initiative aims to protect and connect elephant habitats across East and southern Africa to ensure their long-term survival. By preserving their natural habitats and allowing them to move freely, elephants can better cope with the challenges posed by climate change. As global temperatures continue to rise, it is crucial that conservation efforts are intensified to safeguard the future of these magnificent animals.
