Concerns about Global Warming among Indians and their Support for the 2070 Net Zero Goal | Opinion

“Majority of Indians Support Clean Energy Transition and Action on Global Warming: Exclusive Survey Results”

An exclusive survey conducted by CVoter for Yale University’s Program on Climate Change Communication reveals that a majority of Indians are deeply concerned about global warming and its impacts. The survey, conducted between September and November 2023, interviewed 2,178 adult Indians above the age of 18 and found that 78 per cent of Indians believe global warming is happening, with 85 per cent saying they have personally experienced its effects.

The survey also highlighted that 84 per cent of Indians support banning the construction of new coal power plants, closing existing ones, and replacing them with solar and wind energy. Additionally, about 3 in 4 Indians are willing to pay up to 10 per cent or more for energy-efficient appliances and electric vehicles to reduce costs and combat global warming.

The findings of the survey indicate a significant shift in public opinion towards environmental protection policies and the clean energy transition. Despite concerns about potential backlash against ambitious action on global warming, the survey shows that 15 percentage points more Indians believe the government should be doing “much more” to address global warming compared to the previous survey in 2021-22.

The impact of global warming on India is becoming increasingly personal, with extreme weather events such as heatwaves, cyclones, and floods becoming more frequent and severe. The survey revealed that a large majority of Indians are worried about various hazards affecting their local areas, including heatwaves, droughts, air pollution, famines, cyclones, and floods.

Furthermore, the survey highlighted that a significant percentage of Indians are willing to change their behavior and support collective actions to combat global warming. More than 90 per cent of Indians support national programs to train people for new jobs in the renewable energy industry and fund environmental protection efforts.

Despite the challenges associated with transitioning to clean energy, the survey found that a majority of Indians support the 2070 Net Zero carbon pollution goal announced by the Indian government. Additionally, most Indians believe that transitioning from coal to wind and solar energy will reduce air pollution, even though concerns about potential job losses and electricity price increases remain.

Overall, the survey indicates that Indians recognize the reality and seriousness of global warming and are willing to take action to address it. The majority of Indians support strong measures to combat global warming and prefer a future powered by clean energy.

The survey results underscore the urgent need for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize climate action and work towards a sustainable and resilient future for India.
