The study focused on quantifying the balance between photosynthesis, which involves the uptake of carbon dioxide, and respiration, which releases carbon dioxide, in various land-based ecosystems. By developing a new approach to infer how respiration is affected by temperature changes across North America, the researchers were able to gain valuable insights into the carbon fluxes at a continental scale.

The team found that respiration is less sensitive to warming than previously thought when viewed at the biome or continental scale. However, they emphasize that this is just one piece of the puzzle and that reducing carbon emissions is crucial in combating climate change. The researchers caution against relying solely on natural processes to offset human-induced carbon pollution and stress the importance of taking immediate action to reduce emissions.
