Research shows that U.S. wildlife faces growing threats due to increasing drought frequency

“Climate Crisis: How Droughts Impact Wildlife in the U.S.”

A wild deer was recently spotted in a backyard in southern California, searching for food and water amidst the ongoing climate crisis that is leading to more frequent and severe droughts in the region. According to a new study, wildlife species in the lower 48 United States will suffer from year-long droughts almost five times as frequently in the coming decades as they did historically.

The study, conducted by researchers at Colorado State University and published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, found that droughts lasting three years could become nearly seven times as frequent in the future. This lack of moisture affects how animals compete for resources, contributes to habitat loss, and leads to heat stress and dehydration.

Lead author of the study, Dr. Merijn van den Bosch, emphasized that the increased drought exposure for each species depends on future greenhouse gas concentrations. Even under a lower-concentration scenario, virtually all vertebrates are expected to face increased year-long and multi-year droughts in the second half of this century.

One species highlighted in the study is the giant kangaroo rat, an endangered species native to California’s dry habitats. While these rats have adapted to occasional short droughts, populations can plummet following multi-year droughts, compounding existing threats such as habitat loss.

The study also revealed that many game species, including elk and certain duck species, will face more frequent droughts lasting one and three years in their ranges. This shift could have implications for game and wildlife management.

To address these challenges, the researchers identified areas with high biodiversity that are predicted to have large increases in drought, in order to prioritize conservation efforts. The study underscores the importance of mitigating climate change and assessing species’ vulnerability to extreme weather events to minimize biodiversity loss.

Overall, the research highlights the urgent need for proactive conservation strategies to protect wildlife in the face of increasing droughts and other climate-related challenges.
