“Rescuing Sara: The Journey of a Lion Cub from Beirut to South Africa”
In a daring rescue mission, a lion cub named Sara was saved from a life as a TikTok prop in war-torn Beirut by the animal welfare organization Animals Lebanon. The cub was rescued from a social media influencer who was using her in videos, and was later transported to a wildlife refuge in South Africa.
The journey began in the early hours of the morning at a deserted marina in Beirut, where a group of men loaded the metal cage labeled “live lion” onto a yacht. The cub, named Sara, was then taken on a boat trip to Cyprus before being flown to Dubai and then Cape Town, where she arrived at the Drakenstein Lion Park sanctuary.
Animals Lebanon, founded in 2008, has rescued and transported 25 lions, tigers, and other big cats from Lebanon to sanctuaries around the world. The organization has been instrumental in rescuing animals left behind by owners fleeing Israeli airstrikes, providing care for over 200 pets in their headquarters in central Beirut.
The rescue of Sara, the fifth lion rescued by Animals Lebanon since the conflict escalated between Hezbollah and Israel, highlights the challenges faced by animals in war-torn regions. Keeping lions and tigers as pets is illegal in Lebanon, but they are often used as props by affluent individuals seeking to boost their social media presence.
Despite the ongoing conflict and human suffering in Lebanon, Animals Lebanon continues to prioritize the welfare of animals, recognizing the importance of their work in helping both animals and the community. The organization’s efforts to rescue and relocate animals to accredited wildlife facilities in South Africa demonstrate their commitment to providing a better life for these animals.
As Sara embarks on her journey to a new life in South Africa, the caregivers at Animals Lebanon reflect on the challenges and rewards of caring for the young lion. The bond between Sara and her caregivers is evident in the videos showing her playful interactions and daily routines, highlighting the dedication and compassion of those involved in her rescue.
The successful rescue and relocation of Sara serve as a reminder of the importance of animal welfare in conflict zones and the tireless efforts of organizations like Animals Lebanon to provide a better future for these animals.
