Increased Turbulence in Flights Due to Climate Change: What Does the Future Hold for Air Transportation?

“Climate Change Impact: Brace Yourself for More Flight Turbulence Ahead”

Climate Change is real, and its effects are being felt in various aspects of our lives, including air transportation. A recent study has shown that flight turbulence is on the rise due to Climate Change, posing potential dangers for air travelers in the future.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has acknowledged that Climate Change is a significant factor behind the increasing turbulent events experienced during flights. He emphasized that this is the reality we live in now, with Climate Change impacting various industries, including transportation.

The study titled “Evidence for Large Increases in Clear-Air Turbulence Over the Past Four Decades” highlighted the exponential growth of flight turbulence in recent years. It predicted that the severe or greater flight turbulence classification will be 55 percent more frequent in the North Atlantic region by 2020.

Reports have already documented injuries and deaths resulting from severe turbulence encountered during flights, indicating the growing hazards in the air. Despite advancements in technology, predicting turbulent winds remains a challenge for airlines, pilots, and other aviation professionals.

Clear-air turbulence, a phenomenon that is still not fully understood, has been linked to Climate Change. Studies have shown a significant increase in clear-air turbulence hours since 1979, with warmer air and amplified wind shear of jet streams attributed to CO2 emissions and global warming.

The US Department of Transportation has echoed the findings of the 2023 study on flight turbulence, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address Climate Change. While the adverse effects of increased flight turbulence may not be immediately apparent, they could have far-reaching consequences for air transportation and the environment.

As we grapple with the impacts of Climate Change, it is essential for individuals and governments to take proactive measures to mitigate its effects and protect our planet. The rise in flight turbulence serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address Climate Change for the well-being of future generations.
