“Record-Breaking Heat: June 2024 Hottest Month Ever Recorded on Earth”
In a world already grappling with the effects of climate change, the latest data from the European Union’s climate agency has revealed that June 2024 was the hottest June ever recorded on earth. This alarming statistic marks the 12th consecutive month to surpass the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold for global warming, highlighting the ongoing trend of rising temperatures.
According to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) report, June 2024 was 0.14 degrees warmer than June 2023, setting a new record for unprecedented heat. This streak of monthly global temperature records has been consistent over the past year, making each respective month the hottest ever recorded on the planet. This pattern is reminiscent of a similar trend that occurred in 2015-2016.
The 1.5 degrees Celsius global warming mark was established in the 2015 Paris agreement, where world leaders from over 200 nations pledged to limit the increase in global average temperature to mitigate the risks of climate change. However, the recent data from C3S Director Carlo Buontempo suggests a “large and continuing shift in our climate,” emphasizing the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prevent further warming.
The report also raises concerns that 2024 could surpass 2023 as the hottest year ever recorded, with a 95% chance according to research scientist Zeke Hausfather. The soaring temperatures have already had devastating consequences, with over 1,300 reported deaths during Hajj in Saudi Arabia and over 40,000 cases of suspected heat stroke in India, leading to over 100 heat-related deaths.
The Centre for Holistic Development reported 192 homeless deaths in Delhi during a relentless heatwave in June, underscoring the urgent need for global action to address the escalating impacts of climate change. As the world continues to experience record-breaking temperatures, the time to act is now to prevent further catastrophic consequences.
