Unmasking the Reality of India’s Deadly Heatwave: A Call to Action
India is currently facing its longest heatwave on record, with devastating consequences. The ongoing heatwave has resulted in 143 recorded deaths and close to 42,000 people suffering from suspected heatstroke. This extreme heat is not a sudden occurrence, as India experienced an extreme heatwave in March 2022 and extreme humid heat in April 2023, leading to casualties and health issues.
A recent study by the World Weather Attribution Initiative confirmed that extreme heat in South Asia is becoming more frequent, with climate change playing a significant role in increasing temperatures. The April 2024 mean temperature in India has increased by 0.85 degrees Celsius, making extreme temperatures 45 times more likely.
The impact of this intense heatwave extends beyond human health, affecting India’s economy, particularly the agricultural sector. Crop failures due to heatwaves can lead to decreased yields and poor crop quality, impacting farmers’ livelihoods and increasing food inflation for consumers. The Climate Transparency Report of 2021 warned that rice and maize production could decrease significantly with temperature increases, leading to income loss in various sectors.
Despite these clear warnings and dangers, the Modi government’s track record in addressing climate change and heat emergencies has been lacking. The government’s reliance on coal for energy needs and the rapid issuance of environmental clearances for large projects have exacerbated the climate crisis. Rampant environmental clearances have led to irresponsible development practices, further damaging India’s climate and environment.
The current heatwave has highlighted the inequities in society, with economically disadvantaged communities bearing the brunt of the heat emergency. Lack of access to water, electricity, and medical attention has worsened the impact of the heatwave on vulnerable populations. The government’s response to the heat emergency and its preparedness for future climate crises will be crucial in mitigating the damage and protecting lives.
As India grapples with the consequences of extreme heat, it is essential for the government to take urgent action to address the climate crisis and protect vulnerable communities. The focus should be on providing support, shelter, and care to those affected by the heatwave, while also implementing long-term strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change. The time for denial is over, and decisive action is needed to safeguard the future of India’s environment and population.
