Global rise in heart disease risk attributed to climate change

“Climate Change and Your Heart: How Extreme Weather is Putting Your Health at Risk”

Climate change is not only impacting the environment but also the health of individuals around the world. A new review published in JAMA Cardiology highlights the detrimental effects of extreme temperatures, hurricanes, and other dangerous weather events on heart health. Researchers, including Dhruv Kazi from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, warn that urgent action is needed to mitigate climate change-related cardiovascular risks, especially among vulnerable populations.

The review analyzed data from nearly 500 studies conducted between 1970 and 2023, focusing on the associations between heart health and various weather phenomena. The findings revealed that older adults, minority groups, and the poor are disproportionately affected by climate change, with the risk of heart-related death remaining elevated for months or even years following extreme weather events.

For example, Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused a significant increase in the risk of death from heart disease, which persisted for up to a year after the storm. Additionally, events like wildfires can have widespread effects on heart health, with wildfire smoke increasing the risk of cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular problems.

Dr. Kazi emphasized the need for further research to accurately quantify the risks associated with climate change on heart health, particularly in low-income countries where populations may be at even higher risk. Patients can also take steps to protect their heart health by planning ahead and minimizing exposure to extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and other environmental stressors.

As climate change continues to worsen, it is crucial for individuals, communities, and policymakers to prioritize efforts to address the impact on cardiovascular health. By taking proactive measures and raising awareness about the risks, we can work towards a healthier future for all.
