Governor Gavin Newsom to Attend Vatican Climate Summit

The Vatican is set to host a three-day conference next week, titled “From Climate Crisis To Climate Resilience,” in an effort to address the pressing issue of climate change. The conference will bring together politicians, researchers, and policymakers from around the world to discuss and strategize on ways to combat climate change and promote climate resilience.

One of the key highlights of the conference will be the signing of a new international protocol that will be submitted to the United Nations. This protocol, titled “Planetary Climate Resilience,” is aimed at providing guidelines for making everyone climate resilient and will be modeled after the successful Montreal Protocol.

Among the distinguished guests attending the conference are Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, as well as Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. Governor Healey will deliver a keynote address on “Governing in the Age of Climate Change,” while Governor Newsom and Governor Hochul will also address the attendees on the second day of the summit.

Governor Newsom emphasized the significance of this year in addressing the intertwined issues of democracy and climate change, stating that the stakes could not be higher. He also praised the leadership of Pope Francis on the climate crisis, highlighting the importance of moral authority in driving action on climate change.

The conference will feature mayors from major cities in Europe, lawmakers from Asia and Africa, researchers, academics, and representatives from international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization. The participants will engage in panel discussions and roundtable sessions focused on mitigation efforts, adaptation strategies, and societal transformation to promote climate resilience.

The summit will culminate in the drafting of the “Planetary Climate Resilience” protocol, which will be signed by all participants and submitted to the UNFCCC for further action. The protocol aims to guide nations in becoming climate resilient and will serve as a crucial step in addressing the global climate crisis.

Overall, the Vatican’s conference on climate change is a significant effort to bring together key stakeholders to collaborate and take concrete steps towards building a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet. The involvement of political leaders, researchers, and policymakers from around the world underscores the urgency and importance of addressing climate change on a global scale.
