The Impact of Climate Change on Teenagers

“Teenagers on the Frontlines of Climate Change: Stories of Resilience and Hope”

In October, the storm surge from Hurricane Milton flooded 15-year-old Michael Miranda’s street in Land O’ Lakes, Fla. This event is just one example of the impact of climate change on teenagers around the world. The sense of crisis is real for these young individuals, disrupting their adolescence in ways both large and small.

One such teenager is Lucy Currie, 14, from Jasper, Alberta. After experiencing the devastation of wildfires that swept through Jasper National Park, burning over 81,000 acres and ravaging the town of Jasper, Currie found herself displaced from her home and grappling with the loss of personal belongings and memories. The impact of climate change hit close to home for Currie, as she now navigates a new normal in a town where a third of the buildings were destroyed.

Similarly, Obama Mchembe, 15, from Toangoma, Tanzania, faces challenges due to climate change affecting his ability to access staple foods like rice. With floods, heat, and drought making it harder to grow crops, Mchembe and his classmates have taken action by planting trees to combat the effects of climate change in their community.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh, 16-year-old Ayesha Ali struggles with the health effects of air pollution and extreme heat, which have led to skin issues and respiratory problems. The overcrowded city offers little respite from the impacts of climate change, leaving Ali feeling like she was born in the wrong generation.

In Huaraz, Peru, Daniela Bazán, 16, witnesses the disappearance of glaciers that once provided water for drinking and agriculture in her community. The practical consequences of melting glaciers are felt by Bazán and her neighbors, impacting their way of life and livelihoods.

In Ota, Nigeria, Ireoluwa Ajayi, 16, considers himself lucky to have access to resources like solar-powered fans and water purifiers to combat the effects of extreme heat and flooding in his region. Despite his relative privilege, Ajayi still faces challenges like heat rashes and isolation due to climate-related disruptions.

Athanasios Kosteas, 16, from Kalamata, Greece, feels the burden of climate change on his generation, as extreme heat affects his ability to concentrate at school and work. As a member of Greece’s youth parliament, Kosteas recognizes the need for action on climate change to fall on young people like himself.

Sara Saumanaia, 15, from Christchurch, New Zealand, and Tuvalu, grapples with the dual identity of living in a country that is thriving while her family’s homeland is threatened by rising sea levels. Saumanaia is determined to preserve her Tuvaluan heritage and culture, even as the future of her family’s island hangs in the balance.

These stories highlight the diverse ways in which climate change is impacting teenagers around the world, from displacement and loss to health issues and cultural preservation. As these young individuals navigate the challenges of a changing climate, their resilience and determination to make a difference offer hope for the future.
