“Empowering Communities: Climate Action and Health Equity at Climate Week”

Climate for Health, in partnership with the National Association of Community Health Centers and the American Public Health Association, recently hosted a session on climate action and health equity at Climate Week. The event took place at the Sun River Health Bedford Avenue Health Center in Brooklyn, showcasing local challenges and inspiring actions in New York City, as well as national perspectives and resources.

The session featured a lineup of esteemed speakers, including Ben Fulgencio-Turner, Director of Climate for Health; Anne Kauffman Nolon, Chief Executive Officer of Sun River Health; Zoya Terstein, Staff Writer at Grist; Julian Watkins, MD, Assistant Commissioner of the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building at the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene; Jessica Hinshaw, Director of Environmental Health at NACHC; and Katherine Catalano, Deputy Director of the Center of Climate, Health & Equity at APHA.

The collaboration with Sun River Health as hosts was particularly significant as health was a core theme of Climate Week for the first time this year. The focus on local climate impacts and actions in New York City highlighted the importance of addressing climate change within the context of public health.

Ben Fulgencio-Turner, the Director of ecoAmerica’s Climate for Health program, expressed gratitude to the hosts and emphasized the importance of featuring local perspectives in discussions on climate and health equity.

For those interested in further resources on climate action and health equity, Climate for Health provides additional resources such as the American Climate Leadership Awards 2025, ClimateRx registration, the Children and Youth Mental Health and Climate report from 2023, Climate for Health Ambassador Training, and various other resources available on their website.
