Study Finds Sea Otters Utilize Tools to Crack Open Larger Prey, Preserving Their Teeth – EcoWatch

“Unlocking the Secrets of Sea Otters: How Tool Use Helps Them Survive”

In a recent study conducted by researchers from Monterey Bay Aquarium, University of California, Santa Cruz, The University of Texas at Austin, and other institutions, it was found that southern sea otters who use tools like rocks and shells to break open mollusks have higher rates of energy consumption and reduced wear on their teeth. This behavior allows them to eat bigger prey, giving them a better chance at survival in a changing environment.

With only around 3,000 southern sea otters left in California, these adorable creatures are listed as threatened under the United States Endangered Species Act. They play a crucial role in the restoration of the state’s damaged kelp forests. Sea otters prefer to eat abalone and sea urchins, but as these delicacies decline, they often turn to clams, mussels, marine snails, and crabs. However, the hard shells of snails can be damaging to their teeth.

The research team tracked 196 southern sea otters off the California coast to study their tool use, dental health, and dietary patterns. They found that using tools led to less tooth injuries and wider availability of prey for both female and male otters. Female otters, in particular, had less damage to their teeth and were able to eat prey that were as much as 35 percent harder compared to males who used tools.

Female otters, like females of other species such as chimpanzees, bonobos, and dolphins, are more likely to utilize tools. This behavior is crucial for their survival, especially in environments where their preferred prey is depleted. The study, published in the journal Science, highlights the importance of tool use for the overall survival of southern sea otters.

The researchers emphasized that conservation efforts should focus on protecting the habitats of sea otters and ensuring the availability of their preferred prey. By understanding and supporting the natural behaviors of these animals, we can help ensure their continued survival in the face of environmental challenges.
