Promoting Planetary Health: SOFPON Advocates for Functional Primary Health Centres in Nigeria
The Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) has recently highlighted the significant impact of the healthcare sector on the environment, stating that it accounts for 4.4% of global carbon emissions. In order to address this issue, they emphasize the importance of functional primary health centers (PHCs) across Nigeria.
During a press conference to mark the 2024 World Family Doctor Day, themed “Healthy Planet, Healthy People,” Dr. Amos-Olufemi Okedare, the chairman of SOFPON in Oyo State, emphasized the role of family doctors as champions of planetary health. He noted that these healthcare professionals witness the direct health impacts of climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction, which contribute to the rise of both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Okedare stressed the interconnectedness between the health of the planet and the well-being of its inhabitants. He called for a shift towards clean energy sources such as solar and wind power, while discouraging the use of fossil fuels and combustion engines. Additionally, he advocated for sustainable practices like reducing non-biodegradable waste pollution, promoting reforestation, and adopting paperless initiatives.
Dr. Folajimi Senjobi, the Public Relations Officer of SOFPON in the state, highlighted Nigeria’s significant carbon emissions, ranking 25th in the world. He emphasized the need to transition from fossil energy to affordable, clean energy solutions to mitigate the environmental impact.
As part of the World Family Doctor Day celebrations, activities such as tree planting, a medical outreach program in the Ajibode community in Ibadan, and a public lecture on ‘Healthy Planet, Healthy People’ were organized. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Temitope Ilori, the Director General of the National Agency for Control of HIV/AIDS (NACA).
In conclusion, the healthcare sector plays a crucial role in environmental sustainability, and initiatives like promoting primary healthcare services, clean energy adoption, and sustainable practices are essential in reducing carbon emissions and protecting the planet for future generations.
