Opinion: A Tribute to Seuk Kim – Pilot and Animal Rescuer

“Unsung Hero: The Story of Seuk Kim, the Pilot Who Saved Lives”

Seuk Kim, a 49-year-old man from South Korea living in Springfield, Va., tragically lost his life while piloting a small aircraft carrying rescued dogs to safety in the Catskill Mountains. Mr. Kim, a marketing and public relations professional, had been volunteering his time to fly rescue dog missions for the past four years, transporting dogs from overcrowded shelters to places that could accommodate them.

On the night of the crash, Mr. Kim was flying several rescued dogs from Maryland to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley in Howes Cave, N.Y. Despite the crash, one of the puppies onboard, a 4-month-old Labrador mix named Whiskey, survived with two broken legs and is currently recovering. Another dog, an 18-month-old Terrier mix named Pluto, also survived and may have already found a new home. Unfortunately, a small puppy named Lisa did not survive the crash.

Maggie Pryor, the director of the shelter, praised Mr. Kim for his dedication to saving the lives of hundreds of animals who would have otherwise been euthanized due to overcrowding in shelters. Mr. Kim’s passion for animal rescue flights was evident in his previous missions, including the rescue of Connie the container dog, who was found trapped inside a shipping container at the Port of Houston and later gave birth to eight puppies.

Sydney Galley, a fellow rescue flight worker, described Mr. Kim as someone who never sought recognition but simply wanted to help animals in need. Mr. Kim’s wife, Anna Kang, shared on Facebook that her husband had gained his “angel wings” in the crash, highlighting his selfless dedication to bringing warmth and safety to the animals he flew through the skies.

The animal rescue community mourns the loss of Seuk Kim, a true hero who dedicated his time and skills to saving the lives of countless animals in need. His legacy of compassion and selflessness will continue to inspire others to make a difference in the lives of animals.
