NPR: Possibility of Second Trump Term Could Impede U.S. Transition from Fossil Fuels

“Trump’s Climate Legacy: What to Expect in a Second Term”

In a recent campaign rally held by former President Donald Trump in Phoenix, Arizona, 11 people were treated for heat exhaustion as temperatures soared to a record-breaking 113 degrees. Despite the extreme heat, Trump continued to express skepticism about climate change and environmental regulations, emphasizing his commitment to fossil fuels.

Conservative activists, including former Trump administration officials, have launched an initiative called Project 2025, which aims to dismantle federal programs addressing climate change and repeal laws supporting renewable energy. The plan advocates for a return to fossil fuels and the elimination of incentives for clean energy technologies.

While a second Trump administration could slow down the transition to renewable energy, industry analysts believe that the shift is inevitable due to falling costs and financial benefits associated with cutting emissions. States across the political spectrum are already reaping economic rewards from investments in clean energy.

Despite Trump’s potential policies, the U.S. energy market is influenced by global prices, and companies are increasingly investing in renewable energy due to cost savings and pressure from customers and investors. The election is seen as a referendum on the pace of change in the energy industry and the country’s ability to reduce carbon emissions.

However, experts warn that delaying action on climate change could have severe consequences, including more frequent and severe heatwaves, wildfires, and other disasters. To limit global warming to safe levels, countries must act now to transition to clean energy sources and reduce carbon emissions significantly by midcentury. Failure to do so could lead to irreversible damage to ecosystems and human health.
