University of Victoria Ranks Top 10 Globally in United Nations’ Goals for a Better Future

The University of Victoria has been recognized as a global leader in higher education for its commitment to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and taking action to build a better future for people and the planet. According to the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, UVic has secured a spot in the top 10 among 1,500 universities worldwide, ranking ninth globally and third in Canada for its performance across all 17 SDGs.

One of the key areas where UVic excels is in climate action, where it is ranked first in Canada and third globally. The university has established interdisciplinary climate-specific programs and degrees taught by renowned faculty members on a campus known for its sustainability practices. UVic also ranked fourth in the world for sustainable cities and communities, showcasing its dedication to creating a healthy environment through partnerships and initiatives.

UVic’s president and vice-chancellor, Kevin Hall, emphasized the university’s role as a connector, engaging with local and global communities to find solutions that improve our global existence. The university’s commitment to climate action spans over 30 years and includes research, stewardship, outreach, teaching, and partnerships.

In a recent announcement, UVic revealed its leadership in a national research initiative called Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET), which aims to help Canada reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve its net-zero goal. The initiative, which received an $83.6-million investment from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, brings together over 40 partners, including Indigenous knowledge keepers and community leaders, to develop innovative solutions for energy system transformation.

Lisa Kalynchuk, UVic’s vice-president of research and innovation, highlighted the university’s inclusive approach to addressing the climate emergency, positioning UVic as Canada’s climate university. The institution’s interdisciplinary research and training programs are preparing the next generation of climate leaders to tackle urgent global challenges.

UVic’s performance in research and teaching activities, such as the introduction of an undergraduate climate science degree and a graduate-level coastal climate solutions leaders program, contributed to its high ranking in the THE Impact Rankings. Collaborations with partners on campus sustainability initiatives, including improvements to active transportation options and sustainable construction projects, further demonstrate UVic’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Through initiatives like CIFAL Victoria, UVic offers specialized training and fosters global connections to address the UN SDGs. The university’s top global ranking in making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable reflects its dedication to developing place-based solutions in partnership with organizations like the South Island Prosperity Partnership.

Emilie de Rosenroll, the group chief executive officer of the South Island Prosperity Partnership, commended UVic for its groundbreaking research, innovation, and commitment to addressing global challenges like climate change. UVic’s efforts to drive positive change and make a real difference in the world serve as an inspiring example for other institutions.
