Study Reveals Surprising Aggression Patterns in Endangered Bonobos

The peaceful and endangered bonobo has long been seen as a gentle relative of humans, but new research has revealed a more complex side to these fascinating primates. A recent study comparing the behavior of male bonobos and chimpanzees has shed light on the aggressive tendencies of bonobos, challenging the traditional view of their peaceful nature.

Lead author of the study, Maud Mouginot, explained that while bonobos are still considered peaceful, there is a lot more complexity to their behavior than previously believed. The study, published in the journal Current Biology, observed male bonobos displaying aggression more frequently than male chimpanzees within their own communities. Surprisingly, more aggressive males of both species had greater mating success, indicating that females may not necessarily prefer nicer males.

The research team tracked the aggressive interactions of male bonobos and chimpanzees in their natural habitats, finding that male bonobos were three times more physically aggressive and engaged in 2.8 times as many aggressive interactions compared to chimpanzees. While male bonobos directed their aggression mainly towards other males, chimpanzees were more likely to be aggressive towards females.

One of the key differences observed between the two species was the formation of male coalitions among chimpanzees, which may help explain why aggression is less frequent in chimpanzee communities. The researchers believe that coalitions could potentially lead to more injuries and weaken the group’s ability to defend against other groups.
