Nearly 6,000 Public EV Chargers Installed in UK in First Quarter of 2024

The UK Installs Record Number of Public Electric Vehicle Chargers in First Quarter of 2024

The United Kingdom is making significant strides in the transition to electric vehicles, with a record number of public EV chargers installed in the first three months of this year. The country installed nearly 6,000 new chargers, including 1,500 rapid chargers that can charge a car in under an hour. This surge in charging infrastructure is a response to the growing demand for battery-powered cars and aims to address concerns about EV range and charging station availability.

One of the key factors driving this expansion is the collaboration between local councils and the private sector, with the government providing grants for charger installations. This has led to a 45 percent increase in total chargers since last year, bringing the total number of EV charging points in the UK to over 61,000.

While the share of total car sales that are EVs has plateaued at 15.5 percent in 2024, the UK is actively working to increase the number of chargers, especially in areas with high demand. London, in particular, stands out as the best place to own an EV, with 221 chargers per 100,000 people. However, disparities exist across regions, with Northeast England experiencing the fastest growth in chargers per person and Northern Ireland having the least number of chargers.

The expansion of charging infrastructure is not only benefiting individual EV owners but also impacting public transportation services. More than half of London’s black cabs are now hybrid-electric, with plans to transition to fully electric fleets by next year. This shift towards electric vehicles is not only reducing emissions but also improving air quality and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Overall, the UK’s commitment to expanding EV charging infrastructure is a positive step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system. As the country continues to invest in clean energy solutions, we can expect to see further growth in the adoption of electric vehicles and a reduction in carbon emissions.
