Mexico Prepares for Record-Breaking High Temperatures – EcoWatch

“Mexico Braces for Record Temperatures as Drought Grips the Country”

In Mexico, a record-breaking heatwave is expected to hit the country in the next two weeks, with extreme temperatures driven by El Niño conditions. The lack of rainfall has left 70% of Mexico suffering from drought, with a third experiencing severe drought, according to the national water commission.

Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have warned that the country will experience the highest temperatures ever recorded in the coming days. Temperatures in Mexico City could reach as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with other cities also experiencing scorching heat.

Since the start of the hot season in March, at least 48 people have died from heat-related conditions, such as heat stroke and dehydration. Hundreds of others have suffered from sunburn and other heat-related illnesses. The high temperatures have also taken a toll on wildlife, with endangered species like the mantled howler monkey dying from dehydration.

Dr. Liliana Cortés Ortiz, a primatologist, expressed concern about the impact of the heatwave on other species and ecosystems. She highlighted the rapid changes in climate and habitat loss as major threats to wildlife in Mexico. Scientists believe that the combination of increased temperatures, deforestation, and fires have pushed vulnerable species into smaller habitats with limited resources.

The heatwave has raised alarms about the urgent need for climate action and conservation efforts to protect biodiversity in Mexico. The extreme temperatures and drought conditions serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of climate change on both human and animal populations.
