Map Shows Predicted Climate Changes for Your Home in 50 Years

“Discover How Your City’s Climate Will Change with This Interactive Web App”

A new interactive web application developed by scientists at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science is shedding light on how the local climate around each city is set to change as the global temperatures continue to rise. This innovative tool allows users to search 40,581 places and 5,323 metro areas to see how the climate in their hometown is expected to evolve in the coming decades.

One striking example highlighted by the app is the prediction that Washington D.C. will become as warm as northern Louisiana by the year 2080. According to the application, summers in the capital could be a staggering 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer in just fifty years.

The Future Urban Climates app, which can be accessed online, uses climate analog mapping to match expected future climates with specific locations. This technique has enabled researchers to make projections based on recent data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a U.N. body focused on climate science.

The IPCC data highlights predicted temperature shifts over the next three decades under different emission scenarios. One scenario, reflecting the current trend of rising greenhouse gas emissions, foresees a global temperature increase of approximately 9 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century. In contrast, another scenario envisions a world where countries meet the Paris Climate Accord targets, limiting the temperature rise to about 3 degrees Fahrenheit.

Professor Matthew Fitzpatrick, the spatial ecologist behind the app, emphasizes the importance of understanding the magnitude of climate change impacts and the urgency of taking action to reduce emissions. He hopes that the app will contribute to the ongoing conversation about climate change and help people grasp the significance of the issue.

The Future Urban Climates app provides a valuable tool for individuals to visualize the potential impact of climate change on their local communities and serves as a stark reminder of the need for immediate and substantial reductions in emissions. As the world grapples with the challenges of a warming planet, tools like this app can help raise awareness and foster informed discussions about the future of our environment.
