“UN World Oceans Day 2024: Awaken New Depths with Global Leaders and Thought Provoking Discussions”

United Nations World Oceans Day 2024 will once again bring together high-level officials, UN Delegates, and global thought leaders for an in-person gathering at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday, June 7, 2024. The event, organized by the UN’s Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs in partnership with Oceanic Global, aims to raise awareness about the importance of the ocean and the threats it faces.

The theme for this year’s program is “Awaken New Depths,” highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the ocean and the urgent actions required to protect it. The event will feature a diverse lineup of speakers, including President of the UN General Assembly H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle, actress Bailey Bass, climate scientist Johan Rockström, activist Xiye Bastida, and musician Louis Cato, among others.

In addition to panel discussions and keynote speeches, the program will also include artistic expressions such as musical performances, poetry readings, and the announcement of the winners of the 11th annual Photo Competition for World Oceans Day. The day’s events will be livestreamed on the event website from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EDT and shared on social media platforms.

Actor Michael B. Jordan, who is a vocal advocate for ocean conservation, emphasized the importance of protecting the ocean in a video announcing the event. He highlighted the critical role the ocean plays in sustaining life on Earth and called for greater efforts to safeguard this vital resource.
