Biden Increases Size of Two National Monuments in California

Biden Administration Announces Expansion of San Gabriel Mountains National Monument

The Biden administration’s recent announcement to expand two national monuments in California, the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, is a significant step towards conserving and restoring our natural landscapes. This expansion, totaling nearly 120,000 acres of protected land, aligns with President Biden’s goal of conserving at least 30% of lands and waters in the U.S. by 2030 under the America the Beautiful Initiative.

The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, located near Los Angeles, will see an increase of 105,919 acres, adding to its existing 346,177 acres. This expansion will provide additional protections for endangered species such as the California condor, California spotted owl, and Nelson’s bighorn sheep. Additionally, plans to improve accessibility, reduce pollution, and increase park staff will enhance the visitor experience and ensure the long-term preservation of this ecologically important area.

In northern California, the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument will expand by 13,696 acres, adding to its existing 330,000 acres. This expansion includes the renaming of the ridgeline in the expansion area to Molok Loyuk, or Condor Ridge, signifying the cultural and ecological significance of this sacred land. The area is home to diverse wildlife, rare wetlands, and nearly 500 native California plant species, making it a vital ecosystem to protect.

Critics have raised concerns about the impact of these expansions on resources for agriculture and other land uses outside of conservation. However, The White House has clarified that these expansions will not affect state or private landowners’ property rights, and lands under state or private ownership within the expansion areas are not included in the monuments.

Overall, these expansions honor Tribal Nations and Indigenous peoples by protecting sacred ancestral places and conserving critical wildlife habitat, migration corridors, and clean water sources. The Biden administration’s commitment to conservation has already resulted in the protection of over 41 million acres of U.S. lands and waters, demonstrating a strong dedication to preserving our natural heritage for future generations.
