Altadena artists pledge to rebuild after Eaton fire devastates community

“Rebuilding Altadena: Stories of Loss, Community, and Hope After the Eaton Fire”

A week after the devastating Eaton fire tore through Altadena, killing 17 people and leaving 24 missing, the community is coming together to support those who have been displaced and lost their homes. The fire destroyed more than 7,000 structures, leaving many residents homeless and in need of assistance.

In response to the tragedy, people from all over Los Angeles gathered outside Knowhow Shop in Highland Park to donate bags of toys and clothing to Altadena Kindred, a fundraiser for Altadena children who have been affected by the fire. Altadena ceramist and industrial designer Linda Hsiao, one of the event organizers, expressed her shock and sadness at the loss of her community and the homes of many of her friends and neighbors.

Altadena has long been a refuge for artists and creatives, with a strong sense of community and acceptance. Many artists who called Altadena home have lost everything in the fire, including their homes, studios, and precious belongings. Despite the devastation, there have been moments of grace, with friends and strangers coming together to support those in need.

As the community looks towards rebuilding, there are concerns about land grabs and financial challenges for those who may not have the resources to rebuild. However, many residents are determined to stay and be a part of the rebuilding process. Artists like Victoria Morris and Thomas Renaud are already thinking about how they can contribute to the community’s recovery, whether through creating new art or helping with rebuilding efforts.

The road ahead for Altadena will be challenging, but the spirit of resilience and community that has defined the town for so long will undoubtedly help guide the way forward. As Altadena residents come together to support one another and rebuild their community, they are determined to overcome the devastation and create a brighter future for all.
