“UC San Diego Takes on Global Climate Change Challenges with International Consortium”
UC San Diego is taking a proactive approach to address the global issue of climate change and its impact on human health. Led by Dr. Wael Al-Delaimy, the university has formed a consortium with universities in the Eastern Mediterranean to tackle the health risks associated with climate change in the region.
Al-Delaimy emphasized that climate change is not a localized problem and requires collaboration between countries to effectively address its impact on human health. The consortium will recruit graduate students from Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco to receive advanced training in environmental health at UC San Diego, Berkeley, and Harvard. These students will then return to their countries to address issues such as heatwaves, dust storms, and air pollution policy.
The goal of the program is to implement prevention measures, early warning systems, and alternative policies to limit the impact of climate change on morbidity and mortality in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The mentoring and research team at UC San Diego includes forty-five faculty members from various disciplines, working together to find solutions and recommend policies to mitigate climate change.
UC San Diego has a strong history of climate science research and is committed to understanding and addressing the challenges posed by climate change. Dr. Al-Delaimy has played a key role in introducing the health impacts of climate change as a research program within the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health.
