EcoWatch Reports 110 Million Americans Under July 4 Heat Warnings and Advisories

“Stay Safe in the Summer Heat: Tips for Beating the Fourth of July Scorcher”

Medics in Washington, DC treated and released an elderly man who fainted during a heat wave in front of the Supreme Court as temperatures soared to 90°F on June 20, 2024. The incident occurred as a large portion of the United States, including 110 million people across 21 states in the West, southern Plains, and Mid-Atlantic regions, experienced heat-related advisories and warnings on Independence Day.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the scorching temperatures were part of an extensive heat wave that was predicted to bring temperatures well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. The NWS forecasted that the heat wave would continue into the next week, with record-breaking temperatures expected in various parts of the country.

In Portland, Oregon, temperatures were expected to reach close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit over the weekend, a highly unusual occurrence for the Northwest city. Residents, like hardware store manager Jen Scott, noted the increasing frequency of hot weather in recent years and the surge in sales of fans and air conditioners.

The extreme heat also posed a threat to public safety, with low humidity and wind gusts in Northern California exacerbating the Thompson Fire, which had forced thousands to evacuate and had grown to over 3,000 acres. Authorities warned against outdoor burning and fireworks due to the heightened fire risk.

In Phoenix, Arizona, temperatures were predicted to reach a scorching 116 degrees Fahrenheit by Friday, following a record-breaking streak of 54 days with temperatures of 110 degrees or higher the previous year. The NWS emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, seeking shade, and checking on vulnerable individuals during the heat wave.

As the heat wave persisted, construction workers in Fontana, California continued to work in sweltering conditions, with temperatures reaching 96°F. The NWS advised caution for those planning outdoor activities on the Fourth of July and urged swift action in response to signs of heat-related illnesses.

Overall, the extreme heat wave underscored the importance of staying informed, taking precautions, and prioritizing safety during periods of high temperatures. Stay tuned for more updates on weather conditions and public health advisories as the heat wave continues to impact communities across the country.
