12 ways to keep cool and stay safe during a heat wave in the United States

“Beat the Heat: Health Experts Offer Safety Tips as Record-Breaking Heat Wave Sweeps Across the U.S.”

The current heat wave sweeping across the United States has health experts warning of the dangers of heat-related illnesses. With temperatures soaring and humidity levels high, everyone is at risk of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related ailments.

According to Diane Calello, executive and medical director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, heat-related deaths and illnesses are unfortunately common, especially among vulnerable populations such as children, older adults, those with chronic illnesses, and individuals without access to air conditioning.

Symptoms of heat-related illnesses can range from painful cramps and fever to confusion, lethargy, and even seizures. If left untreated, heat stroke can lead to coma and death. To stay safe during the heat wave, experts recommend reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, staying hydrated, and avoiding direct sun exposure.

It’s also important to be aware of the heat risk posed by certain medications. Drugs like antidepressants, antihistamines, and stimulants can increase sensitivity to heat and lead to complications. People are advised to consult with their healthcare provider or pharmacist to understand how their medications might affect their heat tolerance.

Additionally, the use of illicit drugs can further exacerbate the risk of heat-related illnesses. Substances like ecstasy, cocaine, and methamphetamine can impair the body’s ability to regulate temperature, putting individuals at greater risk of overheating.

As the heat wave continues, it’s crucial to take precautions to stay safe and protect against heat-related illnesses. By following safety tips and being mindful of the impact of medications and substances on heat sensitivity, individuals can reduce their risk and stay healthy during extreme temperatures.
