The unequal effects of the climate crisis on the LGBTQIA2S+ community

“Unveiling the Intersection of LGBTQIA2S+ Rights and Climate Justice: Why We Must Stand Together”

Greenpeace activists have taken a stand for climate justice and gender justice at the 2022 Bangkok Pride parade, highlighting the intersectionality of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and the climate movement. The impact of climate change is felt disproportionately by marginalized groups, including LGBTQIA2S+ individuals who may also belong to other marginalized communities such as low-income, Black, Indigenous, or people of color.

The link between the climate crisis and hate crimes is evident, as discrimination and violence can limit the ability of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals to access resources and adapt to changing environmental conditions. LGBTQIA2S+ individuals often face higher rates of homelessness due to family conflicts, threats of abuse, or violence, leading them to move to segregated and often polluted areas to avoid discrimination and harassment.

Research in the US has shown that LGBTQIA2S+ individuals have a 120% higher risk of experiencing homelessness, with LGBTQIA2S+ youth making up 40% of the homeless youth population despite only representing 9.5% of the overall youth population. This risk is even higher for Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) LGBTQIA2S+ individuals.

During natural disasters, homeless and inadequately housed individuals, including LGBTQIA2S+ community members, are often the most affected and yet are frequently excluded from disaster relief efforts. Examples from Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami demonstrate how transgender individuals and those who do not conform to traditional gender norms are systematically discriminated against during times of crisis.

Greenpeace emphasizes the interconnectedness of people and nature, advocating for the rights and well-being of all individuals regardless of gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. The organization’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion is reflected in the work of individuals like Shanthuru Premkumar and Lina Atanasova at Greenpeace Belgium, who strive to create a more inclusive and sustainable world for all.
