Sustainability experts warn that climate-related issues are becoming increasingly urgent

“Sustainability Experts Sound the Alarm: Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss, and Food Security Among Top Urgent Challenges”

The latest edition of the annual GlobeScan / ERM Sustainability Institute Leaders Survey has revealed the pressing concerns of sustainability experts regarding climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, water scarcity, water pollution, and food security. The survey, which gathered insights from nearly 500 sustainability experts in 65 countries, highlights the increasing severity of these challenges and their interconnected nature.

According to the survey, 96 percent of experts identified climate change as the most critical challenge. Additionally, over 80 percent of respondents highlighted biodiversity loss, deforestation, water scarcity, water pollution, and food security as urgent issues. These challenges are closely linked to climate change, with the perceived urgency of food security notably increasing over the past five years.

The findings underscore the need for holistic and collaborative approaches to address these interconnected sustainability challenges. Governments, businesses, and civil society must work together to develop integrated policies, foster innovation, and empower communities to tackle these pressing issues effectively.

The survey results call for immediate action and emphasize the importance of sustainability leadership in driving meaningful change. To learn more about the expectations from sustainability leaders in the coming years, readers can refer to the Sustainability Leaders 2024 report.

The survey, conducted from April to May, involved 485 experts representing various sectors, including business, government, NGOs, and academia, across 65 countries. The comprehensive data gathered provides valuable insights into the current state of sustainable development and the key priorities for addressing global challenges.

For those interested in exploring solutions to climate change and sustainability issues, the VERGE 24 event in San Jose, California, from October 29-31, offers a platform to engage with over 6,000 leaders from diverse industries and sectors. This event aims to facilitate discussions and collaborations to drive the deployment of climate technologies at scale.

Overall, the survey findings highlight the critical need for immediate and coordinated action to address the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, water scarcity, water pollution, and food security. Sustainable development requires a collective effort from all stakeholders to create a more resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.
