Sphen, one half of a same-sex penguin couple, passes away, prompting a touching tribute from the colony

“Sphen and Magic: A Love Story that Captivated the World Comes to an End”

Sea Life Sydney Aquarium announced the heartbreaking news of the passing of Sphen, a beloved penguin who captured the hearts of many around the world. Sphen, along with his partner Magic, formed a unique and special bond that defied traditional penguin relationships.

The story of Sphen and Magic began six years ago at the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, where the two male penguins showcased a deep commitment and affection for each other. Their bond was so strong that they even shared time together outside of the breeding season, a rarity among gentoo penguins.

Tragically, Sphen passed away just shy of his 12th birthday, which is close to the average lifespan of a gentoo penguin. The news of his death has left many fans and aquarium staff mourning the loss of a remarkable penguin.

Magic, Sphen’s devoted partner, was given the opportunity to see Sphen’s body to mourn his loss. The aquarium staff observed Magic singing in response to the loss, joined by other penguins in the colony. The emotional display of grief from Magic and the other penguins was described as a beautiful moment by Renee Howell, the aquarium’s penguin keeper.

The story of Sphen and Magic gained international fame in 2018 when they successfully fostered and raised chicks together. Their ability to share parenting duties and nurture their chicks earned them admiration and respect from many. The pair raised two chicks, Sphengic (Lara) and Clancy, showcasing their exceptional parenting skills.

While same-sex penguin couples are not uncommon, Sphen and Magic’s story stood out due to their successful partnership and shared responsibilities. Other penguin couples, such as Silo and Roy at the Central Park Zoo and Harry and Pepper at the San Francisco Zoo, have also demonstrated similar capacities for successful parenting.

Despite the loss of Sphen, Magic has shown signs of normal behavior as a new breeding season begins. The aquarium shared updates on Magic’s activities, including nest building, feeding, and participating in training sessions, indicating that he is coping well with the loss of his partner.

The legacy of Sphen and Magic will continue to inspire and touch the hearts of many who followed their extraordinary love story. Their bond serves as a reminder of the power of love and companionship, transcending boundaries and norms.
