Report: India, along with 12 other countries with high emissions, facing ‘some of the most severe impacts’ of climate change

India Among 13 High-Emitting Countries Facing Severe Climate Change Impacts: Report

Climate change is a pressing issue that is affecting countries all around the world, with India being among the top 13 high-emitting countries facing some of the severest impacts. A recent analysis by Verisk Maplecroft revealed that India is at the third spot in terms of climate risk, both in the worst-case and best-case scenarios.

In the worst-case scenario, which takes into account the current emission trajectory under existing policies, India is ranked third in terms of climate risk. Even under a best-case scenario of limiting temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, India still holds the third spot in the list of high-risk countries.

The analysis identified 13 high-emitting countries that are set to experience a significant rise in episodes of extreme heat, with Thailand topping the list followed by Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and others. The report highlighted that extreme heat will have a detrimental impact on various economic activities, especially in tropical regions with high humidity or deserts with radiant heat.

While countries like the US and China, the world’s two largest emitters, are not immune to climate risks, they are better equipped to handle the consequences due to adaptation measures being taken. The analysis emphasized the overlap between countries contributing to global warming and those facing the harshest consequences of climate change.

Verisk Maplecroft’s research assessed countries’ exposure to 16 chronic and acute climate risks across different time horizons, providing valuable insights into the potential impacts of climate change. The findings underscore the urgent need for countries to take decisive action to mitigate emissions and adapt to the changing climate to avoid the worst outcomes.

As we move towards a more sustainable future, it is crucial for governments, businesses, and individuals to work together to address the challenges posed by climate change and protect the planet for future generations. The time to act is now, and every effort counts in combating the impacts of climate change on a global scale.
