ProPublica: A Mother’s Journey of Coping with Her Son’s Detainment at Guantanamo

“Uncovering the Truth: Inside the Controversial Detention of Migrants at Guantanamo Bay”

The Trump administration has once again flown about two dozen migrants to the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, less than a week after deporting Venezuelans from the same facility. This time, the migrants come from various countries across the world, including some nations willing to take them back, sparking questions about the government’s selection process.

Angela Sequera, the mother of one of the first migrants sent to Guantanamo, shared her fear and desperation upon learning that her son, Yoiker Sequera, had been transferred to the facility. Yoiker, who had been in an El Paso immigration detention facility, was suddenly taken to Guantanamo, leaving his family in shock.

Sequera and other relatives of the migrants scrambled to establish contact with their loved ones, exchanging messages on WhatsApp groups and searching for information online. ProPublica and The Texas Tribune obtained records on Yoiker and two other Venezuelans at Guantanamo, revealing that they had no criminal history except for illegal entry.

After 13 days without contact, Sequera finally heard from Yoiker, who had been released and returned to Venezuela. However, he refused to discuss his time at the naval base. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security claimed that nearly half of the Venezuelans detained at Guantanamo were members of the Tren de Aragua gang, but provided no evidence to support this assertion.

Recent flights to Guantanamo have brought migrants from various countries, including El Salvador, Nicaragua, Egypt, Ecuador, and others. DHS stated that the facility will continue to house migrants temporarily before they are removed to their home country or a safe third country. Advocates like Zoe Bowman from the Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center expressed concerns about the lack of transparency regarding the conditions at Guantanamo and the reasons for sending migrants there.

The situation raises questions about the treatment of migrants and the decision-making process behind their transfer to Guantanamo. The families of the detainees are seeking legal access to their loved ones and answers from the government. The story continues to unfold as more details emerge about the migrants held at the naval base.
