NBC 5 Chicago is gearing up for Earth Day 2024 with a special presentation of Global Climate, Local Impact: Part 2. This half-hour special will shine a spotlight on four Illinois cities – O’Fallon, Evanston, Naperville, and Chicago – showcasing their innovative efforts in addressing the current effects of global climate change.
Hosted by NBC 5 News anchor/reporter Kate Chappell, Global Climate, Local Impact: Part 2 will provide viewers with an in-depth look at how these cities are working to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The special will feature on-site reports and exclusive interviews with city officials, climate and sustainability managers, and local residents.
In the first segment, O’Fallon, a town located 17 miles east of St. Louis, is embracing the “15-minute city” concept, where residents have access to essential services within a 15-minute radius by foot or bike. This approach is aimed at reducing emissions and promoting a more sustainable way of living.
Evanston, Chicago’s closest northern suburb, is focused on becoming more environmentally friendly. Mayor Daniel Biss will discuss the city’s incentive programs to encourage residents to adopt green practices.
Naperville, known for its focus on solar energy, has over 600 solar installations and plans to expand this initiative further. The city also operates its own electric utility and has implemented a conservation voltage reduction system.
Chicago, a global climate leader, is prioritizing equity in addressing climate change impacts on low-income communities. City officials will discuss updates to the city’s climate action plan to align with current standards.
