Microsoft’s Measures to Combat Rising Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Microsoft has been actively working to counteract the increase in its greenhouse gas emissions since 2020, particularly driven by the expansion of its new data centers. The company has implemented more than 80 measures to address this issue, with a focus on reducing its Scope 3 emissions, which make up the majority of its total emissions.

In its latest environmental sustainability report for fiscal year 2023, Microsoft revealed that its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which are directly related to its operations and power usage, have decreased by 6.3 percent since the 2020 baseline. However, its Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions from customer purchases and supply chain activities, have increased by 30.9 percent during the same period.

The company reported a 3.8 percent year-over-year increase in emissions for fiscal year 2023, marking the third consecutive increase since announcing its goal to become “carbon negative” by 2030. This ambitious goal aims to offset the impact of Microsoft’s carbon dioxide emissions, water consumption, waste production, and land use by the end of the decade.

The rise in emissions has been primarily attributed to the construction of new data centers by Microsoft. The company’s executives acknowledge that as a leading cloud provider, they face unique challenges in developing and using greener materials such as concrete, steel, fuels, and chips. These materials are significant drivers of the company’s Scope 3 emissions.

Microsoft’s competitors, Amazon and Google, have also highlighted data center construction as a growing challenge to their environmental goals. Both companies have made updates to their methodology, making direct comparisons difficult. However, they have also emphasized the importance of addressing energy, waste, and water goals in the face of increasing demand for artificial intelligence services.

To address its emissions challenges, Microsoft has launched a company-wide initiative that includes more than 80 significant measures. These measures are aligned with five priorities set by the Microsoft Climate Council, which include using digital technology to manage electricity and water consumption, increasing data center efficiency, innovating through partnerships, using purchasing power for new solutions, and advocating for public policy changes.

In addition to these measures, Microsoft is also investing in emerging approaches for carbon removal. The company has signed contracts for over 5 million metric tons of carbon removal credits in fiscal year 2023, including a 15-year deal with Chestnut Carbon for a reforestation project. Microsoft is actively working to retire carbon offsets as they are generated, enabling the company to claim carbon neutrality.
