“Meet Nibi: The Massachusetts ‘Diva’ Beaver Who Captured Hearts and Made Headlines”
Massachusetts “Diva” Beaver, Nibi, to Remain at Wildlife Rescue Center
Nibi, the beloved beaver who captured the hearts of many in Massachusetts, will remain at the Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford as an educational beaver, following a decision by Governor Maura Healey. The two-year-old beaver was found abandoned on the side of the road as a baby and has since become a local celebrity due to her mischievous smile and diva-like behavior.
The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) had determined that it was time for Nibi to be released into the wild to find a mate and build her own home. However, Newhouse Wildlife Rescue argued that Nibi was not ready to survive on her own in the wild and would likely face starvation and hypothermia if released.
The disagreement between the rescue center and state officials led to a court battle and an online petition with over 29,000 signatures supporting Nibi’s stay at the rescue center. Governor Healey ultimately sided with the rescue center, issuing a permit for Nibi to remain as an educational beaver.
Newhouse Wildlife Rescue expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from Nibi’s fans and clarified that their goal was never to make a wild animal a pet but to advocate for Nibi’s well-being. They plan to continue training Nibi so that she can eventually be released into the wild.
Beavers play a vital role in Massachusetts ecosystems by damming rivers and streams, and Nibi’s story has shed light on the importance of protecting wildlife in the state. MassWildlife has stated that they are committed to working with the rescue center on the best steps forward for Nibi’s future.
For now, Nibi will continue to enchant visitors at the Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, inspiring others to protect the natural world and appreciate the beauty of these fascinating creatures.
