This warning comes after a disturbing cluster of dead barn cats who had consumed contaminated raw milk. Donald Prater, acting director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the FDA, strongly advises against the consumption of raw milk.

Despite these warnings, raw milk enthusiasts are standing by the claimed benefits and safety of their favorite elixir. Mark McAfee, founder of Fresno’s Raw Farm and the Raw Milk Institute, has reported an increase in customers asking for H5N1 milk in hopes of gaining immunity from the virus, even though bird flu has not been detected in California’s dairy herds. Peg Coleman, a medical microbiologist and advisor to the Raw Milk Institute, has also dismissed the government’s warnings as fearmongering, citing research on the benefits of raw milk for gut health and immune system support.

The process of pasteurization, named after Louis Pasteur, has been reaffirmed by the FDA as effective in destroying harmful pathogens, including avian influenza. However, raw milk advocates like Coleman argue that the risks associated with raw milk consumption are exaggerated and that a healthy gut biome can provide protection against pathogens.
