Climate change poses a threat to the recovery of Brazil’s Spix’s macaw, made famous in the animated ‘Rio’ films

“Saving the Majestic Blue: The Journey to Save the Spix’s Macaw from Extinction”

In the remote town of Curaca, Brazil, a South African couple, Candice and Cromwell Purchase, are on a mission to save the critically endangered Spix’s macaw from extinction. Once abundant in the Sao Francisco River basin, these majestic blue parrots were declared extinct in the wild in 2000 due to poaching and habitat destruction. Scattered in private collections worldwide, the remaining birds faced an uncertain future.

The Purchases have dedicated their lives to breeding and reintroducing the Spix’s macaws into their natural habitat. Working with a German nonprofit, they brought 52 birds back to Brazil in 2020 for breeding and reintroduction efforts. Despite facing challenges such as predation and climate change, the couple has seen some success with the birth of several chicks in the wild.

However, the project recently faced a setback when the Brazilian government threatened to terminate their agreement due to unauthorized transfers of birds. This has put a pause on their plans to release 20 parrots per year over 20 years. Despite these challenges, the Purchases remain committed to their cause.

The Spix’s macaw’s natural habitat is far from the lush rainforests depicted in the “Rio” films. They thrive in the arid caatinga vegetation, relying on the Caraibeira tree for nesting and food. To combat desertification in the region, the nonprofit has partnered with a private company to promote reforestation efforts.

While the future of the Spix’s macaw remains uncertain, the residents of Curaca are hopeful for their return to the skies. The project has already made an impact on the community, with many eagerly anticipating the sight of these iconic birds flying overhead once again.

Despite the challenges and setbacks, the Purchases remain determined to save the Spix’s macaw from disappearing forever. Their dedication and passion for conservation serve as a beacon of hope for this critically endangered species.
