“Hurricane: The Most Decorated Dog in U.S. History Honored for Protecting the White House”
Hurricane, the most decorated dog in U.S. history, passed away this week at the age of 16. Hurricane, a Belgian Malinois, served as a Special Operations Canine for the Secret Service from 2012 to 2016 during President Obama’s second term. He gained recognition for his heroism in protecting the White House grounds, particularly during a fence-jumping incident in 2014.
Hurricane, alongside his canine partner Jordan, received numerous awards for his service, including the USSS Award for Merit, the DHS Award for Valor, and the PDSA Order of Merit. He was also the first dog in history to receive the Animals in War and Peace Distinguished Service Medal in 2022. Despite sustaining injuries during the White House incident, Hurricane continued to serve until his retirement in 2016.
After retiring, Hurricane lived out the rest of his life with his handler and owner, Marshall Mirarchi. Mirarchi went on to establish Hurricane’s Heroes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing subsidized veterinary care for retired law enforcement and military dogs in their later years.
Hurricane’s passing was announced on his Instagram account on February 12, where a heartfelt tribute was shared. The caption highlighted Hurricane’s exceptional abilities and his special bond with his handler and family. The post described Hurricane as a “badass, amazing Secret Service dog” who had a unique ability to read people and show affection to those he cared about.
Hurricane’s legacy lives on through the impact he made during his service and the continued work of Hurricane’s Heroes. His story serves as a reminder of the dedication and bravery of service animals who play a vital role in protecting and serving our communities.
