Simultaneously, the whales emit specific vocalizations that resonate at frequencies capable of vibrating the swim bladders of the fish, causing them to clump together even more tightly. This technique can increase their catch efficiency, allowing them to consume up to seven times more food in a single lunge.

The Study’s Findings

Lead author Eadin O’Mahony, a behavioral ecologist at the University of St. Andrews, spearheaded the research to explore whether bubble-net feeding is an innate behavior or one that is socially learned. The study focused on a population of humpback whales in the Kitimat fjord system in Northern British Columbia, an area that has seen significant ecological changes due to climate factors and historical whaling practices.

Over two decades, researchers collected observational data and photographs of more than 500 individual whales, each identifiable by their unique tail fins, akin to human fingerprints. By analyzing social interactions and the time whales spent together, the researchers were able to map out social bonds within the population.

Notably, during a marine heatwave from 2014 to 2016 that drastically reduced prey availability, whales that had previously never been observed using this feeding technique began to adopt it. Philippa Brakes, a marine biologist at Massey University in New Zealand, commented on the significance of the findings. Although she was not involved in the study, she emphasized that understanding the cultural aspects of species like humpback whales is crucial for effective conservation efforts. "We are not alone in needing a really rich social environment in order to survive," she noted, underscoring the interconnectedness of social structures and survival in the animal kingdom.
